Declaration by the Presidency on behalf of the European Union following the presidential election in Peru on 4 June 2006

ON the 08 June 2006, The European Union extended its warm congratulations to Alan Garcia on his election as President of Peru.

The European Union looked forward to continuing its excellent relations with Peru and supports the efforts of the Peruvian Government to reduce poverty and improve equality and social justice. It reaffirmed its commitment to further enhance political dialogue, trade relations and development cooperation in particular within the framework of its cooperation with the Andean countries.
