Summary: Decision of the European Parliament and of the Council of 5 June 2019 on the implementation of the rules regarding maximum length for lorry cabs, delivering improved aerodynamic performance, energy efficiency and safety performance. Further information: Aerodynamic cabs are seen as bringing important benefits in terms of energy performance of heavy goods vehicles, in particular to reduce air drag, better visibility for drivers, improved safety for other road users together with safety and comfort for drivers. The purpose of this initiative is to remove from the existing legislation the 3-year moratorium for the introduction of aerodynamic cabs after the date of transposition or application of the needed amendments as regards technical-type approval requirements. The Decision is consistent with other initiatives aiming at reducing CO2 emissions and promoting clean mobility. The European Commission proposed the draft law on 17 May 2018, as part of the third 'Europe on the Move' legislative package. An informal agreement between the co-legislators on a compromise text was reached on 12 February 2019. The draft law was formally endorsed by the European Parliament on 26 March, followed by the Council of the European Union on 22 May. |
