European citizenship is an EU Treaty provision which resembles Cinderella before she went to the
ball. With the crisis over the Constitutional Treaty and the uncertain status of the Charter of
fundamental rights, many people might be forgiven for thinking that she and her prince will never find each other. However “Union citizenship has become an established term (whether we like it or not) in community and habitual language use, which can no longer be brushed aside, …….” The seminar aimed to show that despite appearances, European citizenship is developing as a concept on a twin track approach: Case law of the European Court and Justice and the European Citizenship Directive.
