The European Parliament's plenary session held a debate on 15 March 2017 based on a report related to e-Democracy, its opportunities and risks.

Starting from the Estonian experience, the report argues for the need to assess whether the participation of the whole population can be guaranteed in order to successfully implement e-voting in other member states. The report also states that high-speed internet connections and secure electronic identity infrastructure are vital to make e-voting a success.
