Concerns that the United kingdom's competitiveness will be damaged because of the poor take-up of foreign languages in schools has prompted a government review of the way they are taught. Lord Dearing will examine what can be done to encourage foreign languages in schools, including whether to abandon the decision taken by the government to make it voluntary for 14- to 16-year-olds.
