The eurozone's expansion across central Europe and the Baltic states was thrown further off course, 14 September 2006, as the Czech Republic became the latest country to abandon its timetable for joining the European Union's single currency. Comments by Mirek Topolanek, the Czech prime minister, describing as unrealistic the previous government's plans to join in 2010, followed similar delays announced by other EU member states such as Poland and Hungary.
