A former leader of the Turkish Republic of Cyprus (TNRC), Mehmet Ali Talat, stated in January 2016 his optimism on a deal regarding the future of divided Cyprus. Mr Talat considered that an agreement could be reached as early as March 2016, with a referendum likely to follow in the summer. Major obstacles to an agreement were the presence of Turkish troops in the island, the properties in the northern part of the territory which belonged to Greek Cypriots before the division, as well as the official name of a unified Cyprus and the creation of a unified Cypriot army. Nicos Anastasiades, President of Cyprus, and Mustafa Akinci, the Turkish Cypriot Leader, shook hands and spoke of their hopes for a lasting solution to the Cyprus problem at the World Economic Forum at Davos on the 21 January 2016. Media sources reported in March 2016 that Greek Cypriots had asked the Dutch presidency of the Council of the European Union to add Turkish to the EU’s 24 official languages, in order to boost attempts to reach a reunification agreement on the Mediterranean island. |
