Greek Cypriots will vote in legislative elections on Sunday (21 May), the first major test of the governing coalition since a peace plan was rejected by voters two years ago.

Greek Cypriots rejected the EU and UN-backed 'Annan Plan' to reunify the island in 2004.

The ongoing efforts to re-unite the island have not featured prominently in campaigning. Neither have calls from the biggest coalition member to delay eurozone entry by one year, a measure opposed by President Tassos Papadopoulos.

The United Democrats, the only party openly to support the Annan plan, is currently polling at 2%.

AKEL, the communist party which backs Papadopoulos, continues to lead the polls. His centrist DIKO party, lies in third behind the conservative opposition.

The election could have implications for the EU and UN peace efforts.

"The key question is how AKEL does", said James Ker-Lindsay, director of the Civilitas Research Centre. "If its normal 32-33% falls to 26-27%, then [AKEL leader] Dimitris Christofias may come under pressure to challenge Papadopoulos."
