The Turkish Government indicated on 25 March 2005 that it was ready to extend its customs agreement with the European Union to include the ten new Member States that joined the EU in May 2004. In the opinion of many Turks, this move would extend recognition to the Greek Cypriot Government in Cyprus - if confirmed this would remove a huge obstacle to the start of accession talks between Turkey and the EU, due to begin on 3 October 2005.
