The discovery of natural gas offshore Cyprus is a significant development for the island and the region in a time of financial and economic crisis. If the right policies are put in place, Cyprus’s energy resources can help the country to emerge from the economic crisis stronger. Indeed, the crisis and the gas discoveries taken together provide a unique opportunity to re-position Cyprus as an advanced economy and knowledge society, drawing on a range of industries and services. Cyprus needs to set up an investment fund to be used to achieve the goals of the country’s future economic development strategy. |
