Further information: Incumbent President Nicos Anastasiades announced that he would be running for re-election on 14 October 2017, indicating that he wanted to finish the work he had started in his first term in office. He stood as the man who saved the Cypriot economy and the banking system from crashing and as the guarantor of Cyprus's economic stability. As no candidate received a majority of the vote in the first round, a run-off was held on 4 February between the top two candidates, Mr Anastasiades of the Democratic Rally (DISY) and Stavros Malas of the Progressive Party of Working People. Mr Malas defended the traditional positions of his party regarding the economy, a position that became difficult to hold since the party lost the electorate's trust in terms of its management of the economic crisis between 2008 and 2013. The incumbent emerged as the winner with 56 percent of the vote. Two rounds of a Presidential election were held in Cyprus on 28 January and 4 February 2018. |
