Two Croatian generals, Ante Gotovina and Mladan Markac, were found guilty on the 15 April 2011 of war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to a state-led conspiracy to drive out ethnic Serbs in 1995.

The United Nations tribunal for the former Yugoslavia ruled that the two had played significant roles in the murders of several hundred civilians and the use of intimidation to force around 100,000 ethnic Serbs to flee Croatia permanently.

EUObserver reported that support for the European Union plummeted in Croatia following the ICTY judgment. Thousands of people took to the streets on the 16 April 2011 to protest against the UN court ruling. The EU had made the prosecution of all war crimes suspects in former Yugoslav republics a key requirement of future EU membership.
