Croatia and Serbia signed on 20 June 2016 a declaration on improving relations aimed at protecting their respective minorities and definitively define their common border.

Relations between the two countries had been affected by Croatia's stance on Serbia's EU accession talks and the way both countries dealt with the migration crisis affecting Europe. These elements added to the historical tensions coming from Yugoslavia's past.
