Unknown saboteurs blew up power lines to the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine over the weekend of 20-22 November 2015. The Russian Emergencies Ministry said that approximately 2.5mn people were left without electricity in Crimea and Sevastopol Crimea was annexed by Russia against the will of from Ukraine in 2014 after a campaign by Crimean activists and with the support of Russia. However, the territory’s status remained uncertain because of its economic reliance on Ukraine and non-recognition by most of the international community. In a Commentary feature from the European Council on Foreign Relations Gustav Gressel writes that The electricity blackout in Russian-occupied Crimea, caused by the demolition of electricity connections between Kherson oblast and Crimea started a standoff, which to the outside world looked like a planned trade war between the Ukrainian government and Russia. In fact, it was a domestic policy issue, as frustration was mounting in Ukraine over its inability to stop Russia from humiliating the country on various fronts. |
