Summary:Recommendation adopted by the Council of the European Union on 21 June 2024, aimed at tackling vaccine-preventable cancers in the European Union (EU) by boosting the uptake of vaccinations against Human papillomaviruses (HPV) and Hepatitis B virus (HBV). Further information:In the framework of the Europe's Beating Cancer Plan, the European Commission vowed to support EU Member States' efforts to strengthen and expand routine vaccination of girls and boys against Human papillomaviruses (HPV). It also announced that it would help to ensure access to vaccination against Hepatitis B virus (HBV) in order to boost vaccination uptake. This Recommendation addresses such actions. It encourages countries to increase efforts towards fully vaccinating at least 90% of girls against HPV at EU level by 2030, significantly increase the vaccination of boys against HPV over the same period, strengthen efforts to achieve the WHO targets for Europe and improve monitoring of progress towards these targets. It also encourages Member States to ensure that vaccination against HPV and HBV is free of charge and easily accessible, improve communication about vaccination, combatting mis- and disinformation, and integrate immunization against vaccine-preventable cancers into their national cancer plans. The initiative was first included in the European Commission's 2023 Work Programme. A draft Recommendation was eventually adopted by the Commission on 31 January 2024. The text was adopted by the Council of the European Union on 21 June 2024 and published in the Official Journal on 28 June 2024. |
