Greece's parliament elected Prokopis Pavlopoulos as the country's new president on the 18 February 2015. The move was being seen as part of an effort to strengthen the leftist Syriza government's attempts to negotiate its bailout terms with the EU.

Prokopis Pavlopoulos was seen as a pro-European conservative.
