Summary: Report presented on 28 January 2019 by the European Commission on competition law enforcement in the pharmaceutical sector, at EU and national level. Further information: The Report shows that active competition law enforcement, at EU and national level, in the pharmaceutical sector contributes to delivering more affordable medicines and more choice to patients and healthcare systems, and promotes further innovation. It provides an overview of how the European Commission and the national competition authorities of the 28 Member States enforced European Union (EU) antitrust and merger rules in the pharmaceutical sector in 2009-2017. This document responds to concerns expressed by the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament that anti-competitive practices of pharmaceutical companies may endanger patients’ access to affordable and innovative essential medicines. Competition law enforcement and market monitoring in this area became a high priority across the European Union following the Commission's inquiry into the pharmaceutical sector in 2009. |
