Summary: Communication published by the European Commission on 14 October 2015, in which an updated approach regarding external trade and investment is unveiled. Further information: The Communication defends a trade policy which improves conditions for citizens, consumers, workers and the self-employed, small, medium and large enterprises, and the poorest in developing countries, and addresses the concerns of those who feel they are losing out from globalisation. It argues that the policy must deliver growth, jobs and innovation, but it must also be consistent with the principles of the European model. It must be effective at actually delivering economic opportunities. It must be transparent and open to public scrutiny. It must promote and defend European values. The trade strategy embraces sectors which go well beyond goods. It acknowledges the importance of cross-border trade in services and that trade policy - combined with development cooperation - can become a powerful engine of growth in developing countries. It reaffirms the EU's commitment to sustainable development in its trade policies and calls for a trade policy which is able to reinforce the functioning of the EU internal market by linking its rules with the global trade system. |
