Communication: Sixth report on the practical preparations for the future enlargement of the euro area

With only five weeks to go before the adoption of the euro by Cyprus and Malta on 1 January 2008, the European Commission made a final assessment of the state of practical preparations for the currency changeover in both countries, following assessments in November 2006 and July 2007. The Commission concluded that both Member States are well prepared for the introduction of the euro.

In its report issued on 27 November 2007, the Commission notes that, in the last months, Cyprus has achieved considerable progress on the practical preparations, and also significantly increased its communication efforts on the euro. Malta has further refined and completed its practical changeover preparations. The Commission calls on both countries to continue their communication activities on the euro with a view to further increasing the support for the euro.

A staff working document attached to the report addresses the state of preparations in the other Member States which yet have to adopt the euro and presents the results of the September 2007 Eurobarometer survey on public opinion concerning the euro in the recently acceded Member States.
