Further information: Procedurally, a new Commissioner is appointed by the Council of the European Union by common accord with the President of the European Commission after consultation of the European Parliament. According to the document from the Commission, the European Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society aims to support the implementation of the Digital Single Market strategy adopted in May 2015. Its mid-term review was published on 10 May 2017. The President of the European Commission announced on 16 May 2017 his intention to allocate the Digital Economy and Society portfolio to Mariya Gabriel, the candidate proposed by the Bulgarian government as Commissioner. The hearing at the European Parliament was held on 20 June. The Commissioner-designate replied to questions from several committees’ members assessing her skills. The plenary session of the Parliament formally endorsed Mrs Gabriel on 4 July. |
