THE European Commission has pledged nearly EUR 12 million for projects aimed at making the internet a safer place for children to surf.

The cash, which also targets networks such as third generation mobile phones, will set up a European network of 'safer internet awareness centres'.

It will also pay for the running of existing hotlines for users to report illegal content on websites.

Other projects eligible for Commission grants will include a study on children's use of new media, quality labels for websites and benchmarking of filtering systems.

The latter are designed to weed out unsuitable or harmful content.
