Norway stated in January 2015 that the European Commission had requested the country to double the amount it gives to the European Economic Area (EEA) over the following five years. Norway paid around €1.63 billion for its EEA membership during the previous five years.

The statement was made to the press by Vidar Helgesen, the Norwegian minister for the EU and EEA, as the European Commission was negotiating with Norway, Lichtenstein and Iceland their financial contributions until 2020. Such claim was not confirmed by the Commission.

Over the previous year, the EU complained that Norway had put extra taxes on imported goods from the EU and failed to implement more than 400 directives, effectively obstructing the EU's single market. Click here for more information on this subject.
