Government figures released in February 2004 reveal that the amount of electricity generated in the UK from coal-fired power stations in 2003 rose by almost 11%. The pressure group Friends of the Earth has calculated that compared to 2002, emissions of carbon dioxide from energy rose by approximately 3% in 2003.
