Chile and Europe: Partners at the heart of the Union’s relationship with Latin America

Chris Patten, European Commissioner for External Relations made a speech at the EU-Chile Forum in Santiago de Chile.

During his speech, he reminded that The EU and Latin America share fundamental values: the struggle for human rights; belief in an open economy and sustainable development; protection of the individual; efforts to increase regional integration; support for multilateralism; commitment to democracy and social solidarity.

He also reminded that Europe has an important role to play in helping to consolidate Latin America's impressive record of change and in promoting further improvements. Consequently, The European Union must pursue an ambitious, modern and dynamic policy towards Latin America.
