Market liberalisation means Europeans can shop around to get the best deals for electricity and gas. Since 1 July 2007 consumers in most EU countries have been completely free to choose their energy supplier. While customers in some countries, such as Denmark, GB and Spain have enjoyed this privilege for a while, others such as France, Slovakia and Lithuania will only now be able to benefit from this new development. Other countries have been granted exemptions from the new law, so people there will have to wait a little longer – Latvia and Portugal, for example, have until 2010 to open their gas markets. |
