Commentary feature discusses what degree of mutual trust is required between the EU Member States and Institutions to make the operation work well. It concludes that the EU should learn to live with a degree of mutual suspicion, by moderating its ambitions and respecting national self-interest. Criminal justice and policing matters are the most fundamental of state matters and many states and citizens have concerns about transferring powers in this area to Brussels.
