The European Commission has published a regulation proposal concerning a European rail network for competitive freight on 11 December 2008. The Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies (CER) is strongly committed to creating international rail freight corridors and supports the Commission’s intention to increase the competitiveness of rail freight in Europe. With the regulation proposal the European Commission hopes to increase the commercial speed and capacity of rail freight as well as to improve its reliability through developing international rail freight corridors – resulting ultimately in reduced costs and increased competitiveness of the sector.

In agreement with all CER infrastructure managers, railway operators and passengers operators, CER published on 11 February its position paper on the regulation proposal concerning a European rail network for competitive freight (COM(2008)852).
