The Orbán regime in Hungary has attained its real goal: it has harshly seized power; by strengthening centralization and extending the power of the state it has gained the means of exerting unlimited power. However, autocratic rule, unbridled centralization and excessive expansion of state activity are incompatible with healthy running of a modern capitalist market economy. Following this road, it will be impossible to raise the Hungarian economy out of stagnation and onto a path of sustainable growth; and Hungary’s present and future generations will suffer as a result.
