Date: 29/03/01 Enlargement Commissioner Günter Verheugen has cautiously welcomed Turkey's national plan for meeting the criteria for EU membership. Speaking after talks with Turkish foreign minister Ismael Cem in Brussels, Verheugen called the programme "an important landmark in Turkey's preparation for EU membership and the first stage in a far reaching programme of political reform". But the fine detail of the plan is bound to disappoint member states because it does not propose immediate action to improve Ankara's poor record on human rights. |
