Catholic countries “will threaten ethical decisions”

EU DECISION-making on health and ethical issues will be under threat when strongly Catholic countries such as Poland and Malta join the Union next year, a women's campaign group has warned.

The International Planned Parenthood Federation European Network (IPPF) also claims that calls for a reference to Christian values in the EU constitution being drafted by the Convention "might well be the first step in a strategy to overturn existing legislation on abortion, contraception and human rights".

Vicky Claeys, advocacy manager for IPPF, claimed it was "high time" to react to the attempts of the Vatican "to reinstall the Catholic Church as the political leader and legislator in Europe".
