Catalonia became the first of Spain’s mainland regions on the 28 July 2010 to ban bullfighting in a vote that reflected a growing movement against the gory spectacle.

After nearly two years of debate, the regional parliament voted in favour of a popular legislative initiative to amend animal protection laws to include bullfighting.
