Car dealerships ‘will lose sales to supermarkets’

A new survey by the consultancy firm Accenture predicts that traditional car dealerships could see their dominance of new car sales reduced by half as supermarket chains and other retailers move into the industry, following the expiry later in 2002 of the so-called European block exemption which has allowed car manufacturers to avoid normal competition law by distributing new cars only through dealers.
