Deputy First Minister of Scotland (and incoming leader of the Scottish National Party) Nicola Sturgeon set out proposals on the 29 October 2014 regarding a UK referendum on EU membership. Should a Bill be tabled in the House of Commons after the next UK general election in 2015 for a referendum on EU membership, the SNP will table a simple amendment requiring that all four constituent nations of the UK - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland - would have to vote for withdrawal for a UK exit to happen.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron immediately rejected the proposal on the basis that: 'We are one United Kingdom'.
