United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron made it clear to European leaders on the 13 January 2011 that he will not block any efforts to strengthen the euro but insisted Britain would not be part of any new bail-out mechanism.

Mr Cameron was urged by Herman Van Rompuy, the European Union president, to deploy British 'pragmatism' to help solve the economic problems facing Europe, while François Fillon, the French prime minister, also urged Britain to play a constructive role.

'We want a strong eurozone, we want it to sort out its problems, we won’t stand in its way, but we are neither joining the euro nor are we going to be drawn into fresh and new mechanisms within the euro,' Mr Cameron said after Downing Street meetings with each man.
