In the wake of the No to independence vote of the Scottish people in the referendum of 18 September 2014 there was a commitment on behalf of the United Kingdom government to instigate a process for constitutional reform to consider the situation for all the constituent parts of the UK. UK Prime Minister David Cameron called on the 19 September 2014 for a 'new and fair constitutional settlement ... Just as the people of Scotland will have more power over their affairs, so it follows that the people of England, Wales and Northern Ireland must have a bigger say over theirs'. Former UK Foreign Secretary William Hague was asked to co-ordinate the reform proposals for each of the nations, and maybe also to include greater powers to large cities as well. The proposals would not be implemented until after the 2015 general election and would have to be implemented in tandem for all nations. The Political and Constitutional Reform Committee of the House of Commons also agreed on the 19 September 2014 to hold an inquiry looking at the future of devolution in the United Kingdom, in the light of the referendum result. |
