Date: 18/07/02 THE European Parliament is leading a campaign for tougher rules for airlines to combat deadly 'economy class syndrome'. MEPs have backed British socialist Arlene McCarthy's calls for amendments that would force airlines to give passengers information on how they can avoid deep vein thrombosis, caused by blood clots formed in the legs after sitting for hours on cramped airline seats. McCarthy said: 'You are required under civil aviation law to wear a seat belt. In the interests of public health we need similar requirements so airlines warn the public about possible health risks from blood clots on tickets before they fly.'
