North African immigrants in Europe send between €5bn and €10bn back to the Maghreb region every year but the money mostly passes through unofficial channels and hardly benefits north Africa's economies, according to a report presented in Paris on the 14 November 2006. The European Union should harness the rapidly growing funds flowing from Europe to north Africa by establishing an investment bank to collect more of this money and invest it in long-term projects in Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco, says the report, from the Institut de Prospective Économique du Monde Méditerranéen think-tank at the Sorbonne university in Paris. |
