The European Union's Commissioner for Culture called on 5 March 2014 for stronger coordination between local, regional and national authorities to ensure the protection of Italy's Pompeii site.

Heavy rains further damaged the area earlier in the month, adding to previous structural problems created by erosion and natural disasters.

On 6 March, Italy's prime minister appealed to private investors to help restore the site, a UNESCO World Heritage landmark. The site was also subject of funding from the European Union.
