United Kingdom Prime Minister held a Cabinet meeting at Chequers, the country house retreat of UK Prime Ministers, on the 31 August 2016 to mark the start of the government being fully back to work after the summer break and to focus on the key polcy issues on the agenda. In particular, the issue of the United Kingdom preparing to leave the European Union. Mrs May said before the meeting: 'We’ll be looking at the next steps that we need to take, and we’ll also be looking at the opportunities that are now open to us as we forge a new role for the UK in the world. We must continue to be very clear that 'Brexit means Brexit', that we’re going to make a success of it. That means there’s no second referendum; no attempts to sort of stay in the EU by the back door; that we’re actually going to deliver on this'. A Downing Street spokeswoman said that Members of Parliament (MPs) would not get a vote on Article 50, and said cabinet members had agreed that the UK would not seek an 'off the shelf' model for its future relationship with the EU. In reaction to the meeting, the European Commission's First Vice President Frans Timmermans demanded a clarification from the UK on its starting position for the Brexit negotiations. |
