Date: 25/06/1998 German Green MEP Hiltrud Breyer can usually be relied on to point out the less obvious implications of European policy, but her latest parliamentary question beats the lot. “Is the Commission aware,” she asked, “that as a result of the cultivation of insect-resistant plants, bees lose their sense of smell for wild blossom within 15 days and they die earlier?” Spotting a possible scandal, European Commission President Jacques Santer quickly doused the flames of dissent with a marvellously bureaucratic answer. “The Commission presented on 26 July 1996 a proposal for a council regulation supplementing Regulation (EEC) no. 2092/91 on organic production of agricultural products and indications referring thereto on agricultural products and foodstuffs ...” and so on. It's good to know our bees are in such transparent hands. |
