Business leaders and politicians in Germany welcomed a modest 2.7% pay deal agreed by IG Metall, the country’s largest trade union, and engineering industry employers, February 2010, in exchange for job guarantees for some 2.26m workers.

The agreement, reached after 15 hours of overnight negotiations, is likely to set a benchmark for the entire German private sector and give a positive signal for pay talks throughout Europe.
