Bundesbank chief takes policy hard line

Ernst Welteke, president of the German Bundesbank, cast doubt on whether the European Central Bank was likely to cut interest rates when it met on 30 August 2001. He also warned eurozone governments not to tamper with the EU's Stability and Growth Pact, which imposes fiscal discipline on Member States.
