Romano Prodi, President of the European Commission, began a three-day campaign on 23 September 2003 to limit the damage caused by the financial scandal in Eurostat, the Commission's statistics arm. Mr Prodi hopes to persuade MEPs that most of the irregularities at Eurostat took place before he took up his post in 2000.
