Brussels seeks EU stability pact reforms

Pedro Solbes, European Commissioner for Monetary Affairs, is to set out on 27 November 2002 proposals to make the Stability Pact more growth-orientated, while being much stricter on countries with poor public finances. The proposals will largely answer the UK Chancellor's calls for the Pact to be remodelled on UK Treasury lines, removing one obstacle towards British membership of the euro.
