Italy faces demands from the European Commission December 2010 to explain its ban on German-operated trains from stopping on their journeys through Italy, amid a renewed push by the Commission to stamp out anti-competitive behaviour in Europe’s rail market.

The Deutsche Bahn service is the first to operate under EU rules introduced in January 2010 designed to open up international passenger services to competition.

Siim Kallas, the EU Transport Commissioner, said the action was part of a new drive to enforce rail liberalisation.
