Brussels likely to put deficit disputes on ice

At the General Affairs and External Relations Council on 14 December 2004, Joaquin Almunía, European Commissioner for Monetary Affairs, is expected to recommend suspending the threat of sanctions against France and Germany over their budget deficits. Both countries say they will comply with EU rules in 2005.
