Brussels likely to back road toll overhaul

The European Commission was expected to agree, on 23 July 2003, to support controversial plans for a European system of road charging for commercial vehicles, in an effort to reduce the problem of road congestion and produce a new source of funding for transport infrastructure. The International Road Transport Union is concerned such charges will increase overall costs in the road haulage industry.
