Brussels’ high hopes for EU candidates

The 2001 Annual Progress Reports on the economic readiness of candidate countries for European Union membership offer encouragement, but the data contained in the reports show most countries still have some work to do to meet the criteria for EU entry at a time of worsening global conditions.
