The UK Chancellor of the Exchequer (Finance Minister), Gordon Brown, accused the European Commission of “overreaching itself” and making a “serious error of judgment” after it criticised his public spending plans. The chancellor used a meeting of Ecofin, the council of European finance ministers, in Brussels, 7 May 2001, to voice his irritation at the Commission's draft European Union economic policy rules, which said he would have to cut spending on public services if growth in the economy is less than anticipated.
