Following the entry into force of Regulation No.1920/2006 of the European Parliament and the Council on 20 January 2007, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) gained a broader role. Whilst reaffirming the EMCDDA's main purpose as being to provide EU Member States with 'factual, objective, reliable and comparable information at European level concerning drugs and drug addiction and their consequences', the new regulation broadens the scope of the Centre's tasks, granting it a more active role in monitoring new methods of drugs use and related trends.
